The Ministry of Tourism and Wizz Air strengthen bilateral cooperation

Minister of Tourism Miroslav Borshosh and Wizz Air’s Chief Commercial Officer András Szabó met to discuss improving Bulgaria’s air connectivity and increasing flight capacity with two new aircraft and ten new destinations in 2026. During the meeting, the parties discussed Bulgaria’s role in Wizz Air’s growth strategy, which was announced earlier that day at a press conference in Sofia. It was revealed that Wizz Air will launch flights from Sofia to seven new destinations: Chișinău, Marrakesh, Prague, Turin, Warsaw, Palma de Mallorca, and Lamezia Terme.

The discussions at the Ministry focused on opportunities for joint promotional cooperation and the support needed from the Bulgarian government to attract more inbound traffic to Bulgaria and improve the profitability of air routes serving the country. Minister Miroslav Borshosh highlighted the importance of transport connectivity as a key factor in increasing inbound tourism and stressed the need to enhance Bulgaria’s visibility as a preferred tourist destination through joint advertising campaigns. “Our top priority is to achieve maximum visibility for Bulgaria as a destination in key target markets such as Poland, the United Kingdom, and Albania. I am confident that expanding our bilateral cooperation with Wizz Air in this direction will help increase flight capacity, introduce additional new routes — including to and from other airports in the country — and contribute to the sustainable development of the tourism sector in Bulgaria”.

Representatives of Wizz Air shared that the company aims to expand its passenger capacity by approximately 20% annually until 2030. For 2026, Wizz Air plans to operate around 260–270 aircraft, including 42 new A321neo and 8 A321XLR models. They explained that the airline is redirecting resources from lower-performing and newly established routes toward higher-yield markets in Central and Eastern Europe, Italy, Poland, Romania, and Hungary. Wizz Air representatives expressed support for joint marketing campaigns promoting Bulgaria as a year-round tourist destination and encouraging inbound tourism, assuring that the company can offer modern and effective marketing tools and formats to achieve these goals.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Minister Miroslav Borshosh thanked all participants and confirmed the Ministry of Tourism’s readiness for bilateral cooperation in marketing and promotion. Both sides agreed to continue their dialogue in the coming months.
