A national information campaign on the introduction of the euro in Bulgaria was launched with a meeting held in Burgas. The forum was the first in a series of events across the country dedicated to the process of Bulgaria’s accession to the euro area. Participants included Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Communications Grozdan Karadzhov, Minister of Finance Temenuzhka Petkova, Minister of Tourism Miroslav Borshosh, Minister of Energy Zhecho Stankov, Mayor of Burgas Dimitar Nikolov, Governor of the Bulgarian National Bank Dimitar Radev, and Yordanka Chobanova, Head of the European Commission Representation in Bulgaria.
Minister of Tourism Miroslav Borshosh announced the full readiness of the tourism sector for the adoption of the European currency. Addressing representatives of local authorities, the tourism industry, and citizens, he emphasized that the business community has long awaited the euro’s introduction in Bulgaria. “At the Ministry of Tourism, we have held numerous meetings with industry representatives and resolved key issues even before the start of the campaign. “Unity is strength” — this is the motto of the campaign, and we are here to answer honestly the key questions: why, how, and when this process will take place,” said the Minister.
He outlined the main benefits for the sector, including: greater stability and trust in the destination; a stronger international image of Bulgaria as a modern and integrated European country; advantages for businesses through reduced costs and risks; easier and more predictable travel for tourists; a more favorable environment for sustainable investments. The Ministry of Tourism has already organized a number of key forums and discussions, including the National Conference “Bulgarian Tourism and Bulgaria's Accession to the Eurozone”, the international discussion “The Future of Tourism in Bulgaria and Europe”, as well as working meetings with the BNB, the Ministry of Economy, the Commission for Consumer Protection, and tourism organizations.
Minister Borshosh also took the opportunity, given that the event was held in Burgas, to thank the mayors along the Southern Black Sea coast, emphasizing that this season has proven the strength of partnership between the state, local authorities, and businesses. “Our Southern Black Sea coast is a vivid example of how joint efforts can ensure a high-quality tourism product. Congratulations on the achievements this season,” said the Minister.
