Bulgaria is establishing itself as a health tourism destination: Climatic therapy is coming to the fore

07 April 2026

Bulgaria is positioning itself as an attractive year-round destination for health, rehabilitation, and quality of life, with climate therapy assuming an increasingly central role in the development of the tourism sector. This statement was made by the Minister of Tourism, Irena Georgieva, during a discussion organized by "24 Hours", dedicated to natural remedies and SPA medicine as components of contemporary preventive healthcare.

The event was attended by representatives of state and local authorities, the Bulgarian Union of Balneology and SPA Tourism, and leading experts from the medical and academic communities.

The forum clearly underscored the growing interest in climatic therapy—a practice with established traditions in Bulgaria—which is currently being developed as a modern, sustainable tourism product with high added value. The Editor-in-Chief of "24 Chasa", Venelina Gocheva, emphasized the significance of the subject matter and the necessity of presenting the country’s potential more proactively: "You may present Bulgaria and take individuals not only to beautiful places, but also to locations that provide healing and therapeutic benefits."

The event featured the book "Climatic Therapy in Bulgaria", developed in partnership among the Ministry of Tourism, "24 Hours", and the relevant industry organization. The publication consolidates scientific and practical expertise and systematizes the country’s potential for the development of year-round health tourism.

"Bulgaria already possesses all prerequisites to be recognized as a health destination—namely, its climate, mineral waters, traditions, and expertise," Minister Georgieva stated.

The country has over 600 mineral springs, a diverse climate, and established balneological and SPA resorts—resources that position it among competitive European destinations within the rapidly developing health tourism sector.

Health tourism now accounts for a significant share of Bulgaria’s tourism offerings and is growing steadily, attracting tourists seeking preventive care, recovery, and an active lifestyle in an environment with pristine nature and a favourable climate.

Climatic therapy is being established as an integral component of an integrated model that unites balneology, SPA medicine, and naturopathy. This combination creates complex tourism products that ensure year-round employment and enhance the competitiveness of the sector.

The trend is clear—the modern tourist is increasingly seeking not merely a vacation, but an experience focused on health, balance, and preventive measures. Against this background, Bulgaria is already establishing itself as a destination that satisfies these requirements.

The participants in the discussion emphasized that our country is successfully building upon its traditions in balneology and climatic therapy through cooperation among institutions, the business sector, and the scientific community, as well as through investments aimed at enhancing the quality of services.

"Bulgaria is establishing itself not only as a beautiful tourist destination, but also as a jurisdiction in which individuals seek to improve and maintain their health," Minister Georgieva said.
