Development of medical tourism - a priority for Bulgaria
The Ministry of Tourism places health tourism among its main priorities, with a focus on the development of medical tourism. This week the Ministry hosted the first meeting of the Task Force, which was established by Order of Minister Miroslav Borshosh and includes representatives of the Ministry of Health, BUBSPA, Bulgarian Hospital Association, NSA, Medical University - Varna, Foundation of Respiratory Medicine and Association of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine. The working group discussed the necessary steps to establish Bulgaria as a competitive and preferred destination for medical tourism.
"Medical tourism is a strategic opportunity for Bulgaria. We have everything we need to position ourselves as a leading destination in Europe - it is a matter of acting decisively and purposefully. Investments in health tourism will lead not only to economic benefits, but also to establishing our country as a place for quality and affordable healthcare," Minister of Tourism Miroslav Borshosh stated.
He also stressed that our country has exceptional natural resources, modern medical infrastructure and highly qualified specialists. However, so far no significant progress has been made in establishing Bulgaria as a preferred place for treatment and recovery. "A new advertising vision and campaign is to be developed to highlight the country's competitive advantages - quick access to specialists, high standard of treatment and affordable prices," he added.
In order to achieve sustainable development, the Ministry of Tourism will work on a thorough analysis of the market and the medical areas in which Bulgaria can be a leader. Best European practices will be studied and a clear standard for medical tourism will be established. An important emphasis will be placed on the development of spa and wellness tourism, where our country has a serious potential.
The Ministry and the industry will work closely with health institutions, investors and international partners to ensure stability and a long-term outlook for the sector.
