The Eurozone is an opportunity for growth and stability of Bulgarian tourism

25 March 2025

Minister of Tourism Miroslav Borshosh opened the conference "Bulgarian Tourism and Bulgaria's Accession to the Eurozone", organised by the National Tourism Board. The Minister underlined the key role of tourism for the Bulgarian economy and outlined the benefits that the introduction of the euro will bring to the sector. He also noted the fact that the tourism sector is ready for our entry into the Eurozone, but the consumer should be better informed.

Minister Miroslav Borshosh pointed out that we live in a world of populism, our entry into the eurozone is often attacked, adding: "We have to admit that Bulgaria is lagging behind in its information campaign on joining the eurozone. Months and years have been lost". He described Bulgaria's accession to the Eurozone as a strategic opportunity for growth and economic stability and would strengthen the country's position in the European tourism market. The Minister also said that "the Eurozone, apart from something that will actually affect everyone, not only tourism, can be described in strong words as a dream, an ultimate necessity, a new stage in the development of our country."

The introduction of the euro will facilitate the travel of tourists from the Eurozone, who in 2024 represent nearly 30% of all foreign tourists visiting our country. The single currency will remove the need to exchange money and provide greater price transparency, making Bulgaria an even more attractive destination.

Minister Borshosh also highlighted the potential for attracting new investments in the tourism infrastructure, as well as the possibility for long-term growth of the sector. Our country's membership in the Eurozone is not only an economic advantage, but also a sign of confidence – in Bulgaria as a stable, safe and modern destination.

The conference brought together leading experts and representatives of the Bulgarian National Bank, the Ministry of Economy and Industry, the Ministry of Finance, the Economic and Social Council, the Bulgarian Industrial Association and tourism organisations.
