The Bulgarian Orthodox Church “The Assumption of the Virgin” is in the Gledka neighborhood in the town of Kardzhali. The sanctuary includes both the church and the monastery in which it is located. The church basilica, which has three naves, was built in the 20th century. It is both a functioning church and a cultural landmark. The color scheme used to paint the church murals is an interesting mixture of blue and yellow that is often found in the symbolic iconography of Middle Eastern Christianity.
The church preserves a part of Christ’s cross that was discovered among other holy relics during the excavation in 2002 of the Perperikon site near Kardzhali.
